Batteries
With battery technology changing very frequently it is important that we keep up with the different technologies. With our vast knowledge and experience Golf batteries direct ltd are able to offer you our customers a range of batteries that should suit all need’s. There are two main types of battery technology AGM / GEL Technology And Cyclic or Standby.
SO WHICH IS BEST?
AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) this technology that most of the leading world’s battery manufactures use, it is technology that is proven as it has been around for years and works very well on deep cycle and standby type applications. GM is exactly as it say’s, the battery has lead negative and positive plates with Glass Mat separators between the plates.
The battery is then filled with Electrolyte (Acid), The Glass Mat absorbs the acid and it holds the charge between the plates, in most cases the battery is then sealed and is usually called a SLA (Sealed Lead Acid Battery).
GEL Technology is very similar to the above AGM Battery technology, the battery construction is the same however the electrolyte (acid) has a chemical added to enable it to go into a solid state when it is first charged.
However there are many Manufacturers that have a part Gel technology battery, these manufactures use the same AGM Technology as many battery makers but instead of adding the chemical to make the whole battery a solid state they add a gel substance to the lid to create a gel top to the battery. Because of the Gel technology ALL Gel type batteries need to charge at a higher rate so the majority of chargers that Users have are not correct for the type of technology.
Please see our notes on chargers for a guide the Amps we recommend.
Cyclic or Standby.
There are 2 main types of battery purposes,
- Cyclic this type has lead plates inside that are designed to be discharged and recharged (Cycled) repeatedly, these batteries are mainly used in the Leisure market with Boats, Caravans etc on the bigger size batteries and Golf trolleys, Mobility etc for smaller batteries.
- Standby batteries, this type of battery is designed to be discharged very, very slowly and is common on applications like Fire / Security alarms, and standby power units for telecommunications
So What is Best?
ALL GOLF Batteries should be a cyclic type as it is designed to be run down and recharged, if the battery has not got the words Deep Cycle or Cyclic on Then it probably will be a Standby Battery and NOT THE CORRECT TYPE for your golf trolley or buggy.
AGM or GEL? As most GEL types are constructed like AGM, we would advise our customers to stick with the older proven AGM technology, especially as there has been no proven advantage to having GEL.
